I've just tried to instal an outside PIR activated light, bought from B&Q. However, it doens't work properly, and I'm seeking help. B&Q seem unableStatus: ResolvedAnswers: 8You seem say that the red and brown wires on the PIR are connected together. If this is the case it is incorrectly connected. Check that your wiring is:
Mains live to the brown wire on the PIR only.
Mains neutral to the blue wire on the PIR and neutral on the light fitting.
Red wire on the PIR to live on the light fitting only.
Earth to the earth of the light fitting.
This is the nornal arrangement. However if your wiring is correct, follow Girlies advice and it should solve your problem but it is not unknown for new PIR to be faulty, (usually a stuck relay).
Hope this helps.Best answer · 1The PIR has clearly labelled input terminals and some of them have output terminals too. The input terminals must be connected to Live and Neutral supplies from a spur taken from your lighting or ring main circuit. If it's from the ring main then it must be a fused spur with a 3A fuse in the box. You'll need a surface-mounted "fused spur box". Use 1 round flex wiring for this installation rather than flat twin+earth because the round wire fits the PIR entry port properly and will give you a better weatherproof seal. The output terminals must be connected to the light. Generally the light is built into the same housing as the PIR so you don't need to do any extra wiring. If you want to add an extra light then you need a PIR with a pair of output terminals. All earths must be connected to the unit's earth terminal post. Do not use one of these devices without an earth. It is essential that you properly fit the rubber weatherproof seals at the places where wires enter the unit. These can be a real pain but it could be dangerous if you don't do it. If you have to drill through a wall or door frame to pass the wire through make sure that the hole slopes slightly downhill towards the outside surface. This resists rain entry and other damp from creeping along the wire. If it's a new PIR then you MUST follow the wiring instructions provided with it. If it's a second-hand PIR then you should get a competent person to check it for safety before you wire it up.0There are usually two pre-set controls on outside PIR lights. One of these controls the sensitivity of the detector and the other controls the durantion of the illuminated light. Leave these at the factory settings, if you have changed them then reset to mid way position.
During daylight. The first time you power on the light it will come on and stay on for several minutes. It may be up to half an hour. Then it will go off and normal operation will take over: the light stays off during the day and comes on at night when it detects the presence of a warm body (a person or a cat).
The sensitivity control adjusts it so that PIR operation starts at anything from dusk to pitch black. Factory default is best but you may have to twiddle with it. Remember that if you change this control you'll have to wait until evening or night to see how well you've calibrated it. It can take days to get it right.
Every time you turn off the power switch it will reset to the starting scenario and you'll have to wait for it to go off again.0B&q Outside Lights0This Site Might Help You.

Turn power off, wait 5 minutes and turn back on ONCE.
Flicking it On-OFF-ON sets them to constant Illumination.4I think Girlie is right, read the manufacturers instructions and all will become clear!0It could also be done with bog standard 2-way switch
